Poet's Tea

May 24, 2005

On the pier

Barefoot
On the pier
Crabline in hand
Sun, baking
encrusted salt
on my neck.

light refracts between silver swarms of shrimps
evading my net

slipping out to sea.

Address

Your labels are anonymous
I do not know your name
The only thing we share in common
Is the fact we came
here;

different age
stage
one
two

four

eight

of our lives.

I struggle to think of your face
Behind neatly packed envelopes

You are lost to me
Another blank expression
behind neatly folded scarves.

Under your skin

There are hums
You never hear
Until they stop.

Background stress
Capitalising every breath

A solomn shout
Under the surface.

Fads

They flare
In patches of six to
eight
weeks
Distracting me momentarily
From the usual.
All-consuming and particular
They engulf the sleep food work sleep patter of life
with a shadowless light
Only found in one track thought.

Here we are. Possibility.

Pause

and on again.

Tea Time again

A rattle of collected mugs
Harmonious over the air conditioning roar
Like a pack-call to converse,
Meet human contact
Words briefly traded
As teabags are duly dunked
removed
dunked
squeezed
and stirred.

warm break taken
back at the desktop
a circle stains my paper
like the imprint made
by staring at the sun.
